How to Spot An Abnormal Mole

One of the scariest things about all forms of cancer— especially skin cancer— is that you don’t necessarily have to have a genetic predisposition to it. Meaning that anyone at virtually anytime can get it— no matter what your race, gender, family history, or socioeconomic status is. And although there are certain factors that can increase your chances of getting skin cancer, it’s till important for everyone to perform regular cell cancer screenings and come into our Georgia Dermatology Partners office to be professionally examined.

The Shape

Okay, so symmetry in all things isn’t necessarily good— unless it comes to your moles. For the most part, your moles should be round and fairly symmetrical. If they are misshapen and asymmetrical, this is a sign that it may be abnormal. Additionally, look at the border around your mole. Is it even or is it ragged, misshapen, or otherwise abnormal? Your mole’s edges should be smooth throughout, so if you have noticed that they aren’t, then it may be time to schedule an appointment at Georgia Dermatology Partners.

The Size

Have you noticed that your mole has changed in size, specifically in the diameter? If so, this may be another sign that it is abnormal.

The Color

Have you noticed your mole changing color? Is it the same color all around? Has it gotten a lot darker? Any sorts of change in color could also be indicative that your mole is a little abnormal.
