Scheduled Your Sclerotherapy? Here’s What to Do Next

Doctor performs sclerotherapy for spider veins in GA Congratulations on taking the first step toward clearer, healthier-looking legs with sclerotherapy. This injectable vein treatment can eliminate spider veins with no downtime needed. At Georgia Dermatology Partners, we understand that our patients want to prepare for sclerotherapy in the best way so they can enjoy long-lasting results. We’re glad to provide all the crucial sclerotherapy prep info during your first appointment, and this month, we’re featuring some of those essential guidelines here in our blog as well. Here’s what you need to know before and after your appointment.

Medication Changes Before Your Sclerotherapy Session

We recommend making some simple changes the week before your sclerotherapy treatment. Most importantly, you need to discontinue medications that can heighten bleeding and bruising. These include:

  • Aspirin
  • Blood thinners
  • Anti-inflammatory medications

Of course, every patient’s needs are unique, and we review your medication list before scheduling your procedure to give you personalized recommendations. Some patients may need to make other medication changes as well, so be sure to discuss all your current and recent medications with us ahead of time.

Buying Your Compression Stockings

Our doctors recommend purchasing compression stockings the week before our scheduled sclerotherapy. Fit is vital with compression stockings, as too-loose ones won’t provide enough pressure for optimal healing, and too-tight ones can cause discomfort and even leg wounds. We recommend a medium compression level (20-30 Hg). Generally, patients wear compression stockings during waking hours for 7-14 days after sclerotherapy. Properly fitted compression stockings help your body absorb and dispose of the treated veins faster and more efficiently.

After Sclerotherapy

After your sclerotherapy session, your careful prep helps you bounce back quickly. We recommend returning to walking immediately and waiting a week or so before resuming strenuous activity. You must also avoid hot baths and sun exposure for at least two days after treatment. The more closely you follow recovery guidelines, the faster your body can flush out the old vein tissue, and the sooner you’ll have smooth vein-free legs. During your follow-up at Georgia Dermatology Partners, we check your results and make sure you’re healing well.
