Being a teenager is hard. Not only are you dealing with puberty, but friends, school, and school activities can also be stressful. If you have a teenager or preteen who is starting to get some acne, they may be dreading going back to school this year. To help them gain their healthy skin and their confidence back, we have a few tips.
Bring them In
We won’t be able to tell you and your child what they can do for their acne-prone skin unless they come into our office for a dermatology consultation. During their appointment, one of our dermatologists will examine their skin, ask them questions, and then help create a treatment plan that works for them and their skin.
Depending on the severity of their acne, treatment plans can include:
- Prescription mediation
- Topical creams
- Laser
- New Skincare
Teach Them Good Skin Care
Teenagers don’t know how to take care of their skin unless you show them. In addition to bringing your teenager in, one of the best things that you can do for them is teaching them how to take better care of their skin. For instance, try teaching them how to wash their face (and with what products), how to dry their face, how to extract pimples (or leave them alone), and how to apply topical acne medications.
Get Them Into Good Habits
When kids touch their face, don’t wash their face, or sweat a lot during sports, they are creating more bacteria on their skin, which is essentially a breeding ground for acne.
Get your teenager into good habits like:
- Not touching their face
- Using face wipes after the gym or after-school sports
- Washing their face twice a day
- Using all acne creams and mediations
- Not picking at their pimples
One of the best things that you can do as a parent of a teenager is making sure they’re equipped with everything they need and everything they need to know. To learn more about teenage acne, contact our Brookhaven office and call us at Tel: (770) 736-5206.
